Phosphatidyl Serine
The Memory Enhancer
Aging
Aging is a natural process which diminishes our
body's ability to function at an optimal level. As one ages, bodily
functions and systems decline, resulting in many chronic problems.
Notable among these is a reduction in cognitive abilities. Misplacing
objects, an inability yo remember names and places, and a lack of concentration
are some of the chief complains of people over 50. The United States
National Institute of Mental Health uses the phrase, "Age Associated Mental
Impairment" (AAMI) to describe this condition. Although it isn't life threatening,
this problem is a constant source of irritation and embarrassment to those
affected. Researchers have worked for decades to find ways to minimize
these impairments. Recently, their work has led to the discovery
of a brain nutrient that may significantly improve one's mental capacities.
Sources
Originally extracted from bovine tissue, Phosphatidylserine
can now be concentrated from soy lecithin at a lower cost without the fear
of toxicity or contamination. It is most abundant in brain cells
where it is integrally involved in the flow of neurotransmitters.
I readily crosses the blood brain barrier to help maintain the integrity
of cellular membranes which can diminish with age. This is important
in allowing nutrients to enter the cell to promote neuronal activity.
Research
The data from more than twenty human studies
suggests that phosphatidylserine (PS) may help to improve or maintain cognitive
functions in mature adults. These peer reviewed, double blinded,
controlled studies showed a significant improvement in the ability to concentrate
and improve memory. Participants were able to perform day to day
mental tasks better and scored higher on standard neuropsychological tests.
-
one study entitled "Cognitive decline in the elderly:
A double blind placebo controlled multicenter study on the efficacy of
phosphatidylserine administration", showed significant statistical improvement
in elderly patients with moderate to severe cognitive decline.
-
another study dealing with mild cognitive decline
conducted by Caffara and Santamaria, in Italy, showed improvement in short
term memory, mood and behavior.
-
other studies have shown that PS may also have applications
in the treatment of Alzheimer's and Parkinson's disease.
-
a study done by Delwaide et. al. 1986 showed an improved
capacity for self care among patients affected with Alzheimer's disease
and
-
a provisional study by Funfgeld and Nedwidek in 1987,
with patients suffering from Parkinson's disease, noted improvements when
it was added as a supplement to their diet.
-
currently it is also being studied for its antioxidant
properties which, when coupled with all its other applications, may make
this one one of the most significant nutrient advancement in the 90's.
Doses
Available only in trace amounts in soy lecithin,
there's no significant way PS can be procured from an average diet.
Therefore, supplementation is the only way to ingest meaningful amounts.
Studies have shown that PS, when taken in doses between 100-300mg a day
for 1 month and then followed by a maintenance dose of 100-200 per day
afterwards, can have an important impact on cognitive abilities.
Tested at levels of 300mg daily for 60 days in 130 patients, oral administration
of PS showed good tolerability without any adverse effects. Additional
tests confirm that PS is virtually nontoxic and safe for general use in
mature adults.
-
Although further research must be done to fully understand
the role of PS in human physiology, it will help maintain mental fitness
when used in conjunction with a healthy diet and exercise. This will
aid health conscious adults to comfortably meet the challenges presented
by an ever changing technological society.
