Web Mail - Horde/IMP & IMAP service

Many of you have contacted us and told us you were unsatisfied with our old web mail client (phlymail). We have been searching and want to thank a subscriber for letting us know about a client which not only supports your current POP mail, but also provides IMAP services.  It is an open source product called IMP Web Mail Client and it is part of the Horde tool set.

We have also included a few web productivity tools with it:  a calendar planner, an address book, note manager, and  task manager.  It also has some nice search features for your email.

It will work on any of your existing POP accounts and is a FREE service. In addition we have setup several IMAP test accounts.  IMAP will be a paid service because of its additional features:

• It allows you to store 400 megabytes of mail in folders on our mail servers.
• You can move mail between folders on your PC and our servers. 
• You can take advantage of the fact your email will be backed-up to storage tape every day and archived for years.
• NOTE: Make sure you move your mail to alternate folders from your 'INBOX.'  The incoming mail folder is still purged of mail over 30 days old.   Folders you create are NOT purged and you are limited only by space.

The additional cost is  $2/month/POP box.   After testing the IMAP service you can submit the order form at the bottom of this page to have it added to your web site.  You can use IMAP with our web mail client, or from most PC based clients like Eudora or Microsoft Outlook also!

For your USERNAME, use may use either name of your pop box, i.e. p_theb06, or an email address you have with us that is associated with a POP box. For the PASSWORD, use password assigned for that box.   If you had the password stored by your current email program, and have forgotten, you can change it by login at your web site control panel with us (at left).   For the SERVER, you should choose "TheBook POP server". 

SIMPLE USAGE:

• After login, click on the word "Mail" which appears in the upper left portion of the screen.  This will bring up the mail utility.
• Next click on the "Options" icon at the top of the page.
• On the next page, in the right most column "Your Information", choose the top entry "Personal Information" to bring up an Identity display.
• Then click on the link labeled "Edit your identities."
• The next page allows you to enter information for one or more "from" addresses you may wish to use.
• You can then click on the "INBOX" in the upper left corner to see any new mail.   If there is no mail we recommend you send yourself a message from an external email program.

At this point we suggest you just experiment with the different menus and options.  Please let us know if you note any unusual problems.   One of the options which is not available is to save your deleted mail to a trash folder (if you choose that option, mail deletion will not work).  Any of the options which deal with "folders" are not supported since you are not allowed to store additional mail on the servers unless you have IMAP service (below)

An IMAP mail server allows you to actually store your mail in folders on the server (very similar to what you do on your PC).   To support IMAP we have to give you additional space on our mail server to store your messages.   IMAP mail reader programs such as Outlook, Eudora, or Netscape/Mozilla will show you a 'folder' view of the IMAP server and allow you to copy entire folders from the mail server to your PC and vice-versa.

http://mail1.thebook.com/horde  - for your USERNAME, use the name of one of the TEST POP boxes above, i.e. p_theb06, and for the PASSWORD, use 'example'.    For the SERVER, you should choose "TheBook IMAP server".  NOTE - IMAP will NOT work for your existing POP boxes since they are not configured properly for the service.

SIMPLE USAGE:

• We first recommend you complete the 'simple usage' steps included above for POP mail.
• When you return to the 'INBOX' you will see additional folder options in different parts of the display.
• To create a folder: Click on the 'folders' icon at the top of the page.  In the box that says "Choose Action", select "Create Folder."  You will be able to enter the name in the pop-up.  In this display you can see the contents of a folder by clicking on the name.  In this case select "INBOX".
• Move/Copy files to a folder: In the INBOX check the box at the far left of the message display for the messages you wish to move/copy.  On the far right of the display, select the folder name in the menu box labeled "Messages to."  THEN, click on either the "move" or "copy" link just to the left of that box.

You will see additional options on the displays, including ways to highlight different message.  You can also configure your PC to test the IMAP service.  Create a mail account for one of the test email addresses above and select IMAP instead of POP as the server type.

We are accepting requests for IMAP service, the rate is $2/month and it will include an additional 400 Megabytes of disk space for a total of 400 Megabytes.
